In the first quarter of 2021, Australians continued to rely on navigation and map applications to traverse the country's vast landscapes. Sensor Tower provides a closer look at the performance of the top iOS map apps during this period.
Google Maps remained a dominant force with a notable peak in downloads reaching 47K in the third week of January, before stabilizing around the 30K mark towards the end of March. Weekly active users hovered around the 2.5M mark, demonstrating a consistent user base throughout the quarter.
Waze Navigation & Live Traffic saw its downloads fluctuate, with an initial 17K in the last week of December, dipping to around 11K in early February, and bouncing back to nearly 15K by the end of March. Active users showed an upward trend, starting at 416K in early March and rising to approximately 434K by the quarter's end.
For Google Earth, downloads peaked at 15K in the last week of January and experienced a gradual decline to 9K by the end of March. Weekly active users saw a slight increase from 33K at the beginning of the quarter to nearly 34K towards the end.
CamperMate Australia & NZ, catering to the adventurous and travel-savvy audience, began the quarter with downloads at 3.5K, dipping to 1.5K in mid-February, and slightly recovering to around 1.7K by the close of March. Active users experienced a decrease from 3.9K at the quarter's start to approximately 2.7K at its conclusion.
Lastly, Live Traffic NSW, which provides real-time traffic updates, saw an extraordinary spike in downloads during the third week of March, reaching nearly 7.6K from an average of around 1K in the preceding weeks. Weekly active users mirrored this trend with a significant increase from 3.3K to 9.2K during the same period, before a drop to 4.9K in the final week of March.
